Ranking cheap bourbons
Right here. I’ve always liked Evan Williams. May have to try the Old Crow. More on cheap stuff here.

Hmm. When I was in school at UA, we called Old Crow the dirty bird. My personal favorite cheap stuff is Old Charter. A buddy of mine refers to drinking it as “being a signatory.”

Hah. I like this guy.

Can anyone explain the really cheap stuff that’s like 10% aged whiskey and 90% neutral grain spirits?
It’s always really crappy tasting, but I wonder if this is what they do with the stuff that’s just been aged far too long in new charred white oak barrals or something.

I dunno how he’s calling 10 High even faux bourbon. That’s like calling Thunderbird faux Beaujolais. No it’s not. It’s rotgut. Doesn’t even claim to be anything but rotgut.
Other than that I agree with his opinions, on the ones I’ve tried. Rebel Yell is my fave on the list, very smooth, with Evan Williams and Old Crow tied for second. Though whether Rebel Yell is “cheap” seems to depend on where you live. Some places it’s priced about equal to JD and Beam.

There’s a fair amount of misinformation and misunderstanding in that piece. For instance, ALL bourbons are charcoal filtered, but none, including Ezra Brooks, are charcoal filtered like Jack Daniel’s. That is, Ezra Brooks does not use the Lincoln County process (filtration through several feet of maple charcoal), which is what Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel do.
Ten High is not a blend in all markets. In my area (north-west central Indiana), Ten High is a 3 year old straight bourbon, much better than the blend. It’s perfectly adequate as a mixer, equivalent to Old Crow or Heaven Hill’s 3yo. I’ve never had a straight bourbon, no matter how cheap, that wasn’t at least drinkable.
Rating Old Crow Reserve better than Rebel Yell, Benchmark, Old Fitz (try the Bottled-in-bond!), or Evan Williams torpedoes this guys tasting credentials, IMO. Not that it’s bad, it’s just that it’s not as good as those and OCR is too expensive for what it is (which is stuff that didn’t quite rate to be Beam white label). There are much better bourbons for the same price. But then, de gustibus non est disputandum…

Williams is good. Got a glass of right here.
Maker’s Mark is for the weekend.

Logorrhea, I’m afraid. I read his cheap beer ratings. He stays busy collecting witticisms (and they’re good ones), then flails about trying to find brands to hang them on. That’s the hard part, and that’s where he fails.
“Alcoholics go to meetings” due diligence disclaimer: I had no idea that a couple of those were considered “cheap.”

Man, I bought of bottle of Old Crow back in College and had a nice two-day hangover. If its newly acquired by Jim Beam, maybe its worth another try.
Still I’d find it hard to believe that it would really compare to Wild Turkey 101, which is pretty damn affordable, and tastes Fan-frickin’-Tastic in my bourbon drinking opinion.

Evan Williams is usually a daily over here. Funny thing is, they kind of cover the full spectrum of quality. Their cheapest stuff is pretty rough, but their top-shelf stuff will stand up with a lot of higher priced bottles.

Isn’t it sacrilege for a TN boy to even talking about drinking KY bourbon? I get dirty looks from my boss for buying George Dickel here in SOKY .
He is still upset about this:

Old crow… I am no expert in bourbons, but that stuff is rough. It was the drink of choice for one of the guys at deer camp. Since he passed on, we’ve had a round of Old Crow in his memory each year at camp. Feels like it is made of nothing but beaks and claws as its goin’ down the hatch.

Well, some of the distillers are upping their game, so up yours. I did pick up a bottle of Ten High one time when they’d run out of my usual cheap stuff. Right here in the middle of IN, I hope it was the blend or something was wrong with it; it had as part of its taste palette a distinctive rotten mushroom flavor.
