I’d like to revoke my daughter’s authority over me. I’ve been her slave since I saw her little head pop out of her mother’s belly. Nah, I wouldn’t. She’s got me wrapped around her little finger, true, but I love it.
Where Rob “fallacies” is that the government does not love you like your daddy does. If you don’t pay your taxes and you don’t observe the common peace, it has no reason to be nice to you or to even have you around.
I’m just reading Michael Huemer’s ‘The Problem of Political Authority’. He doesn’t seem to be getting at there being a right of government authority other than voluntary submission (actually habit). This, of course, explains why common crimes are part and parcel, but challenge the overseers even non-violently, and they act ruthlessly.
Of course, it all holds together until the middle class start to question the authority. That is part of why they fear the Tea Party so much.
Same principal applies in my chosen profession. We were taught that very same thing when I was coming up many moons ago. Sadly, many have forgotten that and I only hope I can make it until retirement age and get out alive.
When discussing a punishment, Carmela tells Tony that there must be consequences and asks what kind of parents they would be if they don’t punish her. Tony then says that there will be, and he also adds that “with the laws today, you can’t restrain your kid physically. ‘Cause then she would sue you for child abuse.” Carmela insists on consequences, but then he replies to her, “Let’s just not overplay our hand, because if she finds out that we’re powerless, we’re fucked.”

The sad fact is that your power over your kids is limited. Just pray that your kids don’t figure that out.

It’s hard to be completely free, but you can often be freer by denying some toxic people authority over your life.
