The fact that 120 years ago – or so- women had trouble inheriting property, owning property in some states, couldn’t vote, etc.
“Women’s rights” references the fact that traditionally, women haven’t enjoyed equal rights. That also cut both ways as women weren’t drafted, and a few things like that. But “equal” rights? The Republicans defeated the ERA in the 70s. Women and Men have equal rights? Can’t have that.
“As for Gay Rights.” How about the idea that you can’t fire me for being gay. (Not true. You can.) And then there is the contentious idea of “gay marriage.” Depending on who is counting, marriage conveys about 1100 rights – or more. Medical decisions, burial decisions, insurance, inheritance, caring for minor children, and on an on. But ignoring that, in the 50s and 60s, gays were routinely arrested for things like dancing or the way they dressed.
White men always complain about the various aspects of the Civil Rights movement. And it was probably good to be a white man in the 1950s. Everyone else didn’t have equal rights.
