Pistols were ineffectively used from aircraft in early World War 1 until movable and fixed machine gun mounts were made for aircraft. But I’m sure there are some kills made with them considering the slow speed and close range of early World War 1 dogfights.

There was even an air to air 1911 made. It had a extended magazine and a shell catcher on it. I don’t think it was ever used since by the time we got into the war, aerial machine guns were in common use.

Didn’t Louis Awerbuck shoot down a German fighter with a pistol? I think he was on the ground shooting up though.
