Gun and voting rights
I say restore both to felons. Once your debt to society is paid, it’s paid in full.

for NON-VIOLENT crimes, sure.
Once they are off parole or probation then yes, their debt to society is paid. Restore their rights.
And for all others then the mechanism of having congress restore their rights ought to be funded and be back in operation, else it’s a due process violation of rights.

Depends on the felony — there are far too many felonies these days. If somebody gets felonized for having ivory keys on great-grandmother’s piano, or ebony fingerboards on their guitar, that’s one thing. For armed robbery, quite another.

I agree. If society can’t trust you to be out, you should stay in.

Amen to that. Too many people want convicted felons to have LIFE SENTENCES rather than the ones the law calls for.

Plus we all know that many of the violent crimes felons want to ban guns for obvious reasons.

Might as well restore gun rights to convicted felons since they never seem to prosecute them for possessing guns illegally.
How many news stories have you read about a convicted felon arrested while illegally possessing a firearm and then being released – with or without bail – within a couple of months?

Gun rights is the realer issue. Only 13 states bar voting rights for life. In two you can vote from prison. The rest and DC are split between during incarceration only or during incarceration+parole+probation. The GCA is much, much harsher. And let’s not forget the !@##$$% Lautenberg Amendment.

Agreed. If we can’t trust you to vote, carry a weapon, or to be near children then you should be in prison.

We should be serious about the penalties, but once you’ve “paid your debt” it should be considered paid. You should be free and unencumbered. If you’re still stupid or violent or whatever, you’ll do it wrong and we’ll deal with that as need be, but if you’ve pulled your head out of your ass, you deserve not to be reminded every day that you weren’t perfect.

Remember in many of the old Western movies, when the convict was being released from prison, and the warden was there, handing the man his saddle and gun?
The way it used to be.
