Taking a bite out of crime

McGruff The Crime Dog Actor Sentenced On Drug Charges

Why are anti-gun activists so violent?

Not really violent but, hey, I’ve got a meme here. But to the antis, carrying a gun is violent

Kind of funny but it seems Dwayne Feguson advocated for making carrying a gun in a school a felony, as part of NY’s SAFE act. So, it’s a bit odd he’d go and get himself arrested for carrying a gun in a school:

He was a well-known face in the movement for the SAFE Act, the state law that made carrying a gun on school property a felony. He was also a familiar presence in the hallways of the city’s Harvey Austin Elementary School, where he worked in the after-school program and mentored students.

No one imagined that on Thursday he would show up at the school in possession of a gun, touching off an hours-long lockdown, search and ultimately his arrest on two felony charges.

Taylor Freelance Installation

Speaking of making Diane Feinstein cry.

A bit back, I snagged a few Taylor Freelance +6 extensions for the S&W M&P9. After installing, I could only get +2 rounds. Well, thanks to the internet, there’s a fix for that:

Basically, bevel the follower. Try that first, it worked on 3 of mine. I only had to bevel the extension on one of them.

Because you suck . . .

Just to give it a shot and make Diane Feinstein cry, I snagged a Surefire 60 round AR-15 magazine from Brownells. More on that later. But it came with this sticker across the follower (I put it on the mag to make it easy to read):

IMG_20140209_135943

It says:

May not function with some variants including HK416/M27/MR556.

So, basically, no HK stuff. Once again their proprietary way of doing things is an annoyance.

Update: In comments, McThag sets me straight:

H&K is actually not being malicious here. They are simply conforming to the draft STANAG 4179. A standard that the Brit L85 and L86 also conform to.

It should probably be noted that the new P-Mags are 4179 compliant as well. The outlier in STANAG guns is the AR!

Have a gun, get the SWAT team

In a scary trend, that militarized raid I mentioned yesterday was done because an occupant of the home had a carry permit:

Finally, think of the implications if this were the policy everywhere. It would mean that if you’re a gun owner, the police could cite that fact in and of itself as justification for them to violently tear down your door, rush your house with guns and point those guns at your family — even if their warrant is for a nonviolent crime, even if it’s for a white collar crime, even if you’ve dutifully registered your gun with the government. In fact, given that Ross’s permit is how the police knew he was armed in the first place, especially if you’ve dutifully registered your guns with the government. If I were a gun owner in Des Moines, I’d be asking some questions.

See, they couldn’t just knock because the guy had a gun permit. And, you know, permit holders commit more murder than police. Oh, no, wait.

Long term readers will remember the case of Anthony Diotaiuto, who took several 9mm rounds from a subgun in the chest because the police knew he had a gun permit.

That’ll show you who’s boss

So, a firefighter parked his truck to block traffic and tended to the victims of an accident. A police officer told him to move the truck. The firefighter, instead, continued helping the victims. So, the police officer did the reasonable thing and handcuffed the firefighter and detained him.

You will do what they say. Or else.

Policy violation

So, the cops who shot at a couple of women delivering papers because they thought the two small Asian women looked like a big black dude “violated policy”

In NY

There is no system in place to do the background checks on ammo mandated by the SAFE act. Why, it’s like they just threw this thing together with no plan.

VA trusts and NFA items

Mentioned the AGs opinion here. But now there’s House Bill 1266 to address the issue:

(3) “Person” applies to and includes firm, partnership, association, trust, or corporation.

Good.

@SenDougOverbey: I support the second amendment but . . .

MJM:

How about if you back us — the people? Stop local governments when they act arbitrarily to make your law-abiding gun-owning constituents into criminals, for simply stepping across an invisible dotted line into some green space owned by the city? Your constituents can go armed right down the highway in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but you would make that same Blount County hiker subject to arrest on the Greenway! Shame on you.

There ought to be a law

Actually, no, there shouldn’t. Adults should be smart enough to not do that kind of stupid crap without there being a law. But, since they’re not, there will be a law:

A bill backed by the National Rifle Association that lawmakers said would add “common sense” to zero-tolerance policies for guns in public schools sailed through a House education panel on Wednesday.

The measure (PCB KTS 14-02) by House Judiciary Chairman Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, would prevent children from being disciplined for simulating a gun while playing or wearing clothes that depict firearms.

Baxley called the measure “the pop-tart bill” — a reference to a widely reported news story about a Maryland 7-year-old who was suspended from school last year for chewing his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun.

SHARE Act passes house

And prohibits restricting right to carry laws in areas controlled by the Army Chief of engineers.

But it’s not a scandal, they say.

Except:

The new head of the IRS has apologized to those who suffered because of the agency’s targeting of conservative groups, after he testified before a House subcommittee for the first time.

Someone needs to let his boss know because his boss is still lying about it.

Interesting.

Militarized America

A video about a family that was targeted by police with a SWAT raid. A few thoughts:

The video doesn’t jive with the police report that says they knocked.

The po-po ninjaed up in all their cool operator gear to operate operationally in operations to catch a credit card thief.

They didn’t find anything they were looking for.

The young man is right, if he’d not been on the toilet, he’d be dead.

Why are the police disabling the home security cameras? Unless they know they’re doing something wrong.

In Cali

Registration leads to confiscation: A man had his guns confiscated over a misdemeanor drug conviction… in 1970.

Quote of the day

Mental midget Kristen Rand, legislative director at the Violence Policy Center: Just because you’re a law-abiding citizen today doesn’t mean you’re going to be one tomorrow

You’re right! Tomorrow, you might be on the street corner giving knob jobs for a few bucks. So, we should preemptively ban use of your mouth since you might do something illegal with it. And because you use it to say dumb shit.

Irony

Careful when you leave the confines of NSA snooping ‘murica and go to Russia because your privacy is not guaranteed.

PSH to the max

Anti-gun people are mad because anti-gun signs posted at a school have a picture of a gun. Ok, then.

Speaking of SAF

The Second Amendment Foundation is sporting a new webpage, complete with RSS feed. Guess that means they didn’t accept my offer. If they had, it’d have been shiny and new over a year ago!

In CT

State police won’t help or give guidance on post Newtown gun laws:

When Stag Arms of New Britain wanted to produce a scaled-down version of a popular AR-15 rifle that was banned last April by Connecticut — part of a broader crackdown that was upheld Thursday by a U.S. District Court judge in Hartford — it ran the specifications by law enforcement.

“Right off the bat, they were helpful,” said Mark Malkowski, the company’s president and owner. “They did look at prototypes. They did this about three times. After that, they said it really wasn’t their responsibility to determine what was legal or not.”

The reluctance of the State Police to put its seal of approval on the Stag 22, a semi-automatic rifle that accepts lower-caliber bullets and fewer rounds of ammunition than its predecessor, is emblematic of an ongoing tension between the firearms industry and law enforcement over weapons development.

State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said his agency would hate to sign off on a gun, only to have one of its components render it illegal on a technicality.

“Are we going to be responsible for that?” said Vance

Well, are you responsible when you decide one is illegal and arrest a person for that? Why, yes, yes you are.

Beretta sounds off

Ugo Gussalli Beretta says that they left MD due to their gun laws:

In return for our investment in jobs, facilities and assistance to the local economy, we ask for respect and a supportive business climate.

We deserve such respect. We make the standard sidearm for the U.S. armed forces. We also make firearms that police and consumers use to save their lives and the lives of others.

We also make sporting firearms that are enjoyed by tens of millions of people worldwide, from Olympic shooters to weekend hunters.

Our business has grown in recent years, and because of that, we needed to expand production in our U.S facility, located in Accokeek, just outside of Washington, D.C., in the Maryland suburbs.

Unfortunately, as we were planning that expansion, Maryland’s governor and legislature voted in favor of new regulations that unfairly attack products we make and that our customers want.

Job killing Democrats. And, in VA, the election of Terry McAuliffe as governor likely ruled out VA as the location for the new facility.

Another Mayor Quits

Because membership in MAIG is a liability. This time, it’s a mayor in NY.

Rethinking my media avoidance

Some good thoughts from Patrick. I could be ‘that guy’ since I’m fond of using the phrase “because fuck you that’s why”. But I can reign that in. Some.

Media Requests

As mentioned before, I generally don’t do them. I get a half dozen or so every year. This one stood out to me:

“Journalist”:

Say Uncle,

Greetings. I’m a journalist writing a story about the state and future of the gun policy debate in this country, and I’d like to include your voice and perspective in the piece.

Is there a time and a number at which I might reach you at your convenience? Or, if you’d prefer, I can send you some questions via email.

In any case, thanks for your time,

Best,

Me:

No thanks. Based on your other work, I see no indication to expect of (sic)* any sort of reasonable treatment.

“Journalist”:

Fair enough. Thanks anyway.

So, this person tacitly agreed with my assessment? After all, his other “journalistic” work consisted mostly of Media Matters nonsense. I do entertain some media requests but they mostly don’t work out since I give them pre-conditions.

Generally speaking, I simply don’t value the opinion that is counter to civil liberties and don’t engage them because it’s pointless and they’re not worthy of it. Doubly so when they control the final product. So, no thanks.

* Yeah, I’m asshole enough to (sic) myself.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
