Protecting and serving

Apparently, that’s new to this Knoxville cop who appears to be choking out a man who is not resisting. Also, while other officers watch.

Officer Choke Hold is now out of a job… I am sure it was first time too…

  2. Kevin S Says:

Did the officer make it home at the end of his shift?
    OK then.

  3. Standard Mischief Says:

    >>Sherriff Jimmy ‘JJ’ Jones demoted the five officers involved in the incident.

    >>Jones’ action in disciplining the officers was well-received by the community. He’s now up for re-election, with early voting already taking place.

That was the last two paragraphs. This shows the difference between electing the highest ranking law enforcement officer vs. some appointed chief unaccountable to anyone.

  4. HL Says:

Do not worry about the officer. He will be working for another Sheriff’s Dept within a year. Many lawless backwaters here in East TN would love to have him.

  5. Patrick Says:

Fire and (more importantly) referred to the District Attorney for prosecution.

Wife and I are considering Knoxville for a new home in a few years. We have a trip scheduled to look around, this summer. Will be paying attention to this.

This should be prosecuted, and all three of those deputies should spend some time behind bars. Really, I am so sick of these guys doing things that would put us in jail for years, and seeing them only out a few bucks and having to look for another job.

He choked out a college student. They know Twitter, Facebook, and all those other social media things that I avoid. Still, if you want to raise attention then these students know how to do it. My guess is if the victim wants to make an issue of it, we’re going to see some trials in Knoxville.

I’m 57 years old and a little on the slim side, but I would give anything to climb into the ring with this slob.

I agree with Patrick that the DA needs to prosecute him for assualt and battery.

  7. Crawler Says:

Ex-officer Phillips’ “achievements” on his future resume:

“Successfully choked an inebriated handcuffed college kid half my size to the state of unconsciousness without ever drawing my service pistol.”

My money is on the Knox County DA will give Phillips an attitude adjustment in court soon.

  8. Kristophr Says:

Could be worse … If he was an Indianapolis cop he would be drunk while he was chocking him out.

  9. Kristophr Says:

    Choking … derp.

  10. Patrick Says:

@Crawler: There is more nuanced detail beind your wish that might make it more likely:

Despite this dirtbag being a Sheriff’s Deputy, he was providing extra support for Knoxville City PD. That means he is “not one of the city cops”.

I have no idea how close the departments are, but in my neck of the woods departments also work together (staties and county in a rural area), but there is a certain distance that exists.

This referral for possible prosecution went to the CITY attorney. Again, that means different things in different places. But in most places I have lived (NY, LA, etc.) it means that the city attorney will be able to go after a county deputy and still not suffer at the hands of city cops.

So who knows, the victim might actually get a chance at justice here. If he pushes hard enough, and avoids the temptation of an instant settlement from civil action (which perversely dis-incentivize criminal prosecution due to schedule).

Kid needed his ass whupped by his daddy. And if I was his daddy that’s what I’d do. Then I’d find that fat “pig” and butcher him, consequences be damned.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
