Quote of the day: Nostalgia edition
Once you get past the 1970s stopping power arguments and accept that we live in a magical age of pistol bullet equality, it’s no longer a question of capacity but rather a question of “what can you get the most hits with, the fastest.” The answer is almost universally a modern, polymer, service in 9mm.

Most hits? What am I, a NYC beat cop with extra bystanders to hit?

I would include the Sig P series and Beretta M9/92 in addition to the plastic guns.

Using Hornaday critical defense. Bullet looks like one I use in my Muzzy deer season. Those bullets flat out explode in the deer. One time I shot one and the internal organs looked like cottage cheese when I field dressed it.
If the hornaday rounds work as well, it won’t matter if I use 9mm or 380.
Technology is a good thing.

Carry what you shoot best, practice to maintain competence, take care of whatever gun you use.
9mm works fine. So does 40 or 45 or 10mm or a .38 special. Buy one, practice, carry, maintain.
Also, be aware that proficiencies and preferences can change over time. Don’t shoot a caliber just because you’ve always shot it. Experiment during your practice time to see if something might fit you better.

Oh so control-ability is the secret to self defense. I have been saying that since the 80’s…
Gang members have ascribed to the exact same philosophy, since the glock 17 became available.
Of course now the “experts” are saying its okay so it must be right.. LOL!
By the way.. Where have the experts been for the last 30 years? Heads in the sand, thats where.

Having carried a 1911 on and off for a Decade while in the Navy, I’m glad that we live in the era of the Polymer 9. I see it as a Power-to-Weight Issue. If one can carry, oh, let’s say a Loaded Glock that has twice+ the Ammo Capacity as a Loaded 1911, yet it’s total weight is less than a 1911, why be stuck? (Unless one is Trapped in a Anti-Gun State like New York, that is). And paraphrasing Clint Smith, “You think the Ammo Fairy is going to cause a Cease-Fire and Air-Drop Reloads to you in a Gun Fight?”

Caleb ++. As Jerry Miculek shows us, heavy practice is what keeps you alive through a gunfight. How many get to practice moving and shooting though? Moving to cover while firing on your target is the very best way to stay alive, but almost zero ranges let you practice the tactics. You have to find somewhere in the boondocks to do it.
I have a drill for this: email me at perspacatyahoodotcom and I’ll give it to you.

A few years ago a neighbor had a bear come in through his (closed) glass door. He put several 9mm hollowpoints into the bear, whereupon it left to bother another neighbor who dispatched it with a 12 gauge.
Given that, I’ll stick with my .44.

Bears aren’t people. A handful of poorly placed .308s likely wouldn’t stop an elephant. Does that mean it is no good against humans?

And once you can shoot well with your Glock, after lots of rounds and many practice sessions, any other handgun is easier and quicker to shoot! /s

“what can you get the most hits with, the fastest.”
The question should be, “what can you get that gets the best, most accurate hits, the fastest.”
See it’s placement that counts the most. Not spray-n-pray the most with marginal hits.
Cause just hits and good hits ain’t the same thing.

When I started shooting, I found I could shoot best with a Ruger Mark II in the puissant .22LR. And I shot my Ruger a lot, because 1000 rounds cost about $8.00 or so.
When I decided to own and carry a real handgun, I priced ammo. Blazer 9mm was 50 rounds for about $3.50, and .45ACP was about twice that.
I could practice twice as many shots in 9mm than 45ACP.
Now I have to save up quite a long while to take a range trip, where I will shoot very few rounds.
Why can’t ammo behave like cell phones, and get cheaper every year?
