Alan Gottlieb says the gun lobby should lead and not follow on background check legislation. A fair point.

The numbers also show a majority want:
a ban on semi-auto guns,
a federal database tracking gun sales,
a ban on “assault style” weapons,
a ban on online ammo sales,
etc., etc., etc.
Should we ‘lead the fight’ for those too?
I’d rather we fight ALL bullshit feelgood gun laws that criminals ignore.

What, pray tell, does it take to fail a background check today. What will be the criteria for failing a background check in the future?
Should someone on the sans due process “no fly list” fail a background check?
Should someone purchasing legal marijuana in Colorado or Washington fail a background check?
Should someone with an overdue library fine fail a background check?
Careful what you wish for, you might get it …

Spot on! The “gun lobby” should definitely lead background checks … into a Detroit alley and club it to death. And background checks would so follow someone into a Detroit alley; they’re THAT dumb.

It’s a fair point, but mind you that they weren’t willing to offer up an acceptable compromise, which means nothing we lead on is going to satisfy them, so what’s the point?

WE are leading. They are not following. It is not our responsibility to offer something that our enemies will like. Any offer increasingly restricts freedom.

No, no way. Where’s our compromise that does away with UBC’s? Negotiate from there, and listen to the howling of the anti’s.

I know SAF is popular among the Wookies and has been awared the Order of Paul, but anyone sick of these f**ckers stabbing us in the back?

I wouldn’t mind the UBC if they’d make it reasonably convenient to still have private sales, and speed up regular transactions. Make everyone fill one7 4473, get cleared, and get issued a gun buyers number. This number can be verified online or with an automated phone system by anyone as not being revoked, which shall be sufficient to have passed the check.
It won’t happen because it won’t generate the paper trail the interested government parties want to establish for all transactions.

The only purpose of the background check is to lead to registration.
The ONLY purpose.
Background checks aren’t stopping private sales to criminals; they aren’t stopping straw purchases; they aren’t stopping stolen ID being used to buy guns; they don’t stop all mentally ill from buying guns.
As currently constituted, NICS checks serve zero purpose in terms of crime reduction.
