This was a sketchy situation all around, it sounds like. Not something good to get involved in at all.
But, ignoring that, this illustrates one of the few situations where a warning shot is a good idea – when the attacker(s) and the person you are trying to protect are so close together that trying to shoot the attacker(s) means you are just as likely hit the victim.
Not a good idea in this instance either; if an errant “warning” shot or ricochet killed an innocent, this “hero” would be in the PBC lockup himself. Lesson: either shoot to kill or just let the boys play, and in this case the latter is the better.
I’m in teh fla and have been up and down those roads many times (lake and Lucerne are one-way parallels through what once was a lovely boutiqueish downtown route to the beach. That was more than thirty years ago and now the area including nearby Lake Worth High School is considered Gang Central in Palm Beach County.
I’m a hundred miles away in what’s left of redneck fla now, but when I visit I’ll keep my ass out of that area until maybe mutual combat has thinned the wild herd. But if I still find myself in a war zone, if I’m not protecting me or mine, I’ll keep my piece in my pants and hie me the fuck out of there.
I’d like to think that an innocent bystander could man up and admit to a clean miss of a first shot, and not hide behind the “warning shot” explanation.
When I’m at the range and hit the target of the guy in the next lane, it is because I was aiming at that one, whether I was or not. Right?
