The report doesn’t indicate range, which would be pretty important for a birdshot/target load.
Anyone who’s done a fair amount of hunting (and pays attantion) can tell you a lot about what rounds do what, in what sort of tissue. Side-to-side through the lungs is the easiest penetration route, because there’s essentially just a thin leather bag surrounding the softest, squishiest tissue (not counting the ribs of course).

While I wouldn’t recommend bird shot for a defensive round, I would not voulenteer to “go downrange” as it were.
I’d say the same thing about 22lr. I don’t recommend that as a defensive round, doesn’t stop it from being lethal tho.
