If you’re going to do an active shooter exercise
You should probably let your employees know:
A woman from Carbondale claims she suffered emotional and mental distress during an active shooter training exercise she claims she didn’t know she was a part of.
Michelle Meeker is suing the Carbondale police chief and an officer. Her employer, the Heritage Park Care Center, where the exercise occurred October 13, 2013, is also listed in the complaint.
In a complaint received by 9NEWS Tuesday, Meeker claims she was taken hostage by a man with a gun while at work at the assisted living center in Carbondale. Meeker says the gunman held her against her will while she begged for her life.
So, let’s say I was your employee (haha, I know right?) and I shot the hostage taker?

You’d be arrested for capital murder of a police officer.

Assuming the swat team also participating in the drill let you live.

Yeah, you’d have a hard time staying alive once they realized they needed to eliminate alternate versions of whether notifications were made.

I’ve seen stories where the employer was a store or other facility with a large number of non-employees in it on a regular basis. I always figured it was just a matter of time before one ran into an armed citizen…..

Doesn’t even have to be an armed citizen.
Given the whole “Run. Hide. Fight.” mantra… it’s a matter of time before the “active shooter” got jumped from behind and brained with a fire extinquisher or a lenght of pipe.

If some PD and company does not tell their employees its ‘only a drill’ and the whole thing goes south then I can see a lawyer’s paradise as for suing. Most states have laws against hoax bombs and things that cause ‘alarm’ in the community so there is law cases on this.
And if an employee or customer goes ape shit and kills the hostage takers I’d give them a medal.

I live in the Carbondale area. When the news broke locally I wondered aloud what would have happened if she had fought back with whatever was handy… Then I remembered that it’s Carbondale we’re talking about. It’s a liberal town (second only to Aspen) so criminals clearly feel their chances of running into someone with a ‘run-hide-fight’ mentality is pretty low.
