I’m stunned (though I probably shouldn’t be) that an educated adult has no idea who Josef Gobbels was.

“You can teach ’em, but you cant learn ’em.”
Just because someone attended college dos’nt mean that they learned anything useful, or anything at all for that matter.
And, contrary to what most college grads want to believe, attending college dos’nt make one any smarter than they were born to be or the average High School grad.

Take away the names, or any reference to Nazis, or any understanding of who the Nazis were, and the vast majority of American Progressives would agree whole-heatedly and eagerly with just about everything the Nazis stood for.
It’s pretty simple– They have the same ideological roots and share the same early history. It’s only a matter of time– American Progressives will become far more open it. Hillary has already very pointedly declared herself a “proud, early twentieth century Progressive”.

I think someone did that a few years ago: took a bunch of quotes of National Socialists from Hitler on down, removed the names, took them to a campus and started asking “What do you think?”
An awful lot didn’t recognize anything, said something along the lines of “This is great, who said it?”, and freaked when told where they came from. Some of them got seriously pissed.
EvilWrench, Godwin didn’t say bringing up Hitler/Nazis lost the argument, just said “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.” And in some cases, yeah, definitely called for
