Can DC cops find out if you have a carry permit from another state?
Well, if newspapers can, I bet they can too.
Man claims he was pulled over in DC because the cops knew he had a FL carry permit.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.

In North Carolina if police run a plate CCW status is also provided. That information would be provided with out of state inquiries as well. I suspect most other states are the same.

I’m betting they were Feds rather than DCPD.

I know in IN, the LTCH is linked to the driver’s license; they can report it if it’s their policy (or I guess if it’s not against policy) but it’s voluntary otherwise. I’d reckon that information is available out of state as well. Probably the same for other states.

Stupid to consent to the search if it happened that way. Can you guys 100% guarantee that you don’t possibly have a .22 LR lost somewhere in your car right now? My understanding in D.C. and a few other places that is all they need for a felony charge, like the Mark Witaschek case.

After reading the linked post, the real question is: why did they run his plate to begin with? I guaran-bloody-tee no LEO in DC ever stopped anyone because he didn’t use his turn signal.
I think this serves as a stark reminder: the presumption of innocence applies to a court of law… In a cops’ mind: you’re guilty of somethin’.

Didn’t this happen in New Jersey this year, too?

Doesn’t this violate the 4th and 5th Amendments? Supposed liberal governments are now leftist authoritarian and fascist.

Could this be a merger of automatic plate readers and the CCW database so that a scanned plate that has a match to the database pops up an alert to them? They would just drive around trolling for a match, and pull over any that do under any pretext they wish?

Saw a pic somewhere else that said, no matter if you trust the cops, they are trained to not trust you.
That is something to keep in mind EVERY time you interface with police.
EVERY TIME.
I don’t have first hand knowledge but I wonder if it is somewhere on your record if you have a CCW.

I think Robert has it.

This is why you always record any encounter you have with the cops. I’d have told him to give me the ticket. That statement makes it obvious they’re either fishing for a gun/ammo bust, or just trying to harass him because he’s a gun owner.
I wonder if that statement would be enough to exclude anything they might have found in the search? That is a threat of (at minimum) a monetary loss for not waiving a Constitutional right.
Pure thuggery, either way. One more reason to never, ever go to New York.

Depends. If a judge were to rule that DC had to honor out-of-state permits, because Constitution, suddenly DC cops would be completely unable to verify such information.

– Because you are. Most people commit about 3 felonies a day. This is what happens when you government.
