Historically, the NRA has been quite unfriendly to the NFA community. From the original passage of the NFA where the NRA was openly complicit in the scheme, through to today where some/all of the NFA community is still getting the cold shoulder from the NRA.
That being said, the NRA’s historic hostility to NFA-regulated firearms has been breaking down of late, likely as the popularity of such firearms has exploded.
On the whole, I think it’s a result of a demographic shift (younger gun owners are far more NFA friendly than older gun owners), and the realization that our opponents are really out to screw all gun owners.
In other words, the Fudds of gun culture 1.0 are both dying off, and realizing that throwing “cool” guns under the bus won’t keep the anti-rights cultists from coming after their “traditional” guns too.
