I think they considered trying to defend that one in front of the Supreme Court, and realized they could rather keep their regressive gun laws on the books for a little longer if they kept a low profile.

When I lived in Maryland and hated it, I always had New Jersey to use as the end-stage of what Maryland was becoming.

The owner of that flintlock had made the mistake of getting a ride from a 21 yo junkie, who was traffic stopped because of his past history and where he was driving.
Rule 1 for avoiding police encounters: Do not hang out with idiots.
