Have a carry permit? Then you can’t adopt a child
Brian and Valerie Wilson asked the Assembly Judiciary Committee on Wednesday to approve a bill that would allow them to carry their loaded weapons and serve as foster parents.
In testimony to the committee in support of Assembly Bill 167, the couple said their attempts to get a variance from a state regulation prohibiting the carrying of loaded weapons with foster children was denied.
“I am really heartbroken that the Department of Child and Family Services gave us this denial letter,” Valerie Wilson said. “I really want a family.”
Wilson said the Las Vegas couple always planned to become foster parents and adopt but have been denied permission to do so because of the regulation, which he wants to change with the bill. Current rules require guns and ammunition to be stored separately in secure containers in homes with foster children.
Someone with a permit is doing more to protect their children than someone without.

Foster kids are not the kind of kids you want to leave around unsecured guns. Bless them for wanting to help, but I’m not sure they know who they’ll be bringing home.

In Utah, the foster care licensing rules say guns and ammo have to be locked separately, but also specifically says that these rules shouldn’t be interpreted to prevent people from legally carrying. In other words, when they’re not on your person, lock ’em up. I open carry around my foster kids, and their social workers, all the time.

Plain violation of the Second Amendment, failing the rational basis and all other tests.

My guns help me protect the children I have adopted just the same as the home made ones.
This is bullsh*t.

@nk: From what I can gather from the article, it’s not about whether they secure their guns or not. People are being denied for no reason other than because they have a concealed carry permit. They’re treating “holstered and on your person” exactly the same as “lying loaded and unattended on the coffee table”.

Time not to answer the state’s questions? NOTDB. Of course, this argues against the state having licensure/permitting laws as well, if they’re going to use it as a weapon against law abiding citizens.
