The ATF ammo ban goes down

Well, for now:

Under intense pressure from majorities in the House and Senate, the National Rifle Association’s huge membership, the Obama administration has abruptly changed course and is rescinding its push to ban popular and cheap ammo used by AR-15 owners.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said 80,000 comments rolled in, many against the proposal to ban the 5.56 M855 “green tip” ammo. The NRA and the other groups still plan to flood ATF mailboxes with opposition letters just to make sure they go through with their withdrawal.

Maybe the congress critters threatened funding. Good. But keep an eye out. They’ll try to sneak it in at some point.

I’ll take a smallish victory. I didn’t think they would so much as blink.

    Remain vigilant, for sure.

I’m not so sure it’s a smallish victory as it is a regrouping for an attack in a different direction.

“M855 is icky because we say it is, so there!”

For now. I expect a regulatory rush by these POSs in 2016, especially if an R gets the nod. It happened at the end of the Clintonista reign, just standard sop for statists/marxists.

As I understood their statement, they only said they were holding off until the end of the public comments period. They *may* still come back next week and fulfill their mission. Never rest. I believe today’s news was just bad reporting on everyone’s part.

I was vocally against the ban but most folks that I talked to were against the wrong people for the wrong reasons. The talk radio hosts and the news all made it sound as though this was something the “administration” was doing. They aren’t paying close enough attention to know that the goon squad at ATF has been pulling this stuff for generations. No one but the gunternet knew or cared when the JBTs did the same thing to certain 5.45 and 5.7 loads. Now, the bureaucrats get to save face by listening to “the will of the people”. The reversal isn’t a loss, but it’s only a small and temporary victory.

Matt might be right about distinguishing between the President and his administration, and the ATF’s bosses, but I think those bosses know which way the wind is blowing and misbehave accordingly. They don’t have to get a memo to know which evil deeds will earn them sycophant points.

Most any rifle round will penetrate a protective vest that lacks an appropriate ceramic plate insert (as usual, I state the obvious). In theory, any rifle caliber round could fall under the proposed ban.

The solution is criminal control, not gun/ammunition control.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
