Poor situational awareness. Thugs usually make some kind of demand before victimizing someone, asking for money, a cigarette, the time, anything.
Three men approaching me and asking anything of me would get me the heck out of condition clear in a hurry.

“Trapped on a train.” With no escape route to avoid a problem, self defense is the only option. Seated and pinned against the exterior wall, the only choice is take the beating, especially when you’re outnumbered three to one. Stay alert, stay alive; on your feet and mobile is better than stationary and a target.
When questions are obviously posed to establish a foundation for action, fumbling some sort of incoherent answer followed by “excuse me, this is my stop” is the safest path. Another train will come along in a few minutes.
Second, when things do go sour you’re on your own, so either sit there and take it or respond. If you respond, follow Jeff Cooper’s maxim: violence begets violence, hopefully more violence than the other person can enjoy. I’m sure the three choir boys are street smart and more learned about fighting than whitebread boy, but since it’s been established that a single blow to the head can be a life changing – or life ending – event, there’s latitude in self defense.

Officialdom aids and abets this criminality by disarming the victims so it can operate with impunity.

They attacked him because not because of anything about Mike Brown, but because his refusal to “loan” them his phone meant he wasn’t going to be the usual garden variety idiot grab and run victim.
He may be miffed nobody came to his defense, but it was multiple young men who would have then had the usual morons screaming that the defenders were just racist white folks who wanted to hurt yet another nice young black man who was on his way to read the Bible to his poor grandma.
The St. Louis Metrolink is more and more becoming a magnet for miscreants. It used to be a useful way to make it downtown. Anymore, I drive myself if I need to go down there.
