Skirting gun laws
Man uses a black powder gun to murder his ex:
A man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend in a Target parking lot in Montgomery County used an antique-style, black-powder pistol because his record as a sex offender barred him from buying a regular firearm, a prosecutor said in court Friday.
He sought this gun out, Assistant States Attorney Debbie Feinstein said.
The suspect, Donald W. Bricker, 27, of Hagerstown, ordered the handgun online, and it arrived in the mail Monday morning, Feinstein said. He practiced at least one shot at home, and later on Monday drove to Germantown to meet with his ex-girlfriend, Mariam Shad Adebayo, Feinstein said.
Black powder guns aren’t firearms, per law. And there’s no background check required.

I’m pretty sure in Illinois a muzzle loader is, per law, considered a firearm so FOID card, background check and waiting period apply.
I used to enjoy baiting gun controllers by saying “Illinois should have gun laws more like Europe! Illinois should be more like France and not require a permit to buy black powder guns.”

Supposedly certain firearms due to age or collectability are exempt from the FOID requirements. However the state police have control over that and I’ve never found any mention of them exempting a firearm.
Their website even states that you must have a card to possess a muzzleloader. Typical Illinois.
That said, the federal distinction between pre and post 1899 firearms is no more ridiculous than most other attempts at regulation. At least Illinois is consistent in its absurdity.

May not have been black powder. Several cap & ball pistols can be fitted with a drop-in smokeless cylinder to shoot .45LC. e.g. Ruger Old Army

So this guy really, really wanted to use a gun to kill the woman, rather than much less expensive and readily available tools like a length of pipe, rope, an axe, a rock, gasoline/matches, or a bottle of bleach.
The tool used does not matter.

mikee, it seems that any mayhem or murder other than ” gun violence” is preferable to some.
