They should be sneakier, and make a bill defining sporting purposes as “including but not limited to hunting, target shooting, and any form of competitive shooting historically practiced, currently practiced or devised after [date of enrollment of bill]”.
I can’t think of any firearm that wouldn’t cover – but it’s very hard to make a “clean” political argument against.

(For a bonus, include “informal short-range shooting [“plinking”]” and “firearms familiarization practice”.
Then they can’t weasel out of even cheap pistols.)
