Compelling

From the bookface, comes this reddit thread:

Redditors who have had to kill in self defense, Did you ever recover psychologically? What is it to live knowing you killed someone regardless you didn’t want to do it?serious replies only

Compelling? I guess so. But why ask the question, though, really? Talk to a hundred combat soldiers, you’ll probably get a hundred different answers. Some are perfectly OK with it, and to the other extreme some never get over it. Some kill the enemy, leave him behind, and go on with their lives, while others take the enemy home with them and it torments them forever. No doubt it’s the same with civilian self defense killings; all kinds of reactions.

For myself, I’m glad to be alive. Never had to kill anyone or even get in a real serious fight. As with most anyone who’s reached his late fifties though, I’ve had a few close calls. They don’t bother me at all. They just make me glad to be alive, considering what almost happened or how, through some miracle, I and those with me came out unscathed even when “it” did happen.

“How did it FEEL to kill someone?” Seems to me like either a sick question or a borderline sick question. The kind of crap you see on the TV networks, like its suppose to get all wet and excited. No thanks.

There’s more here than just the voyeuristic aspect that Lyle mentions. Having spent most of my 61 years in businesses at relatively high risk of shoot or be shot, I thank God every day that neither has occurred in spite of many potentials; that is a record I hope to keep intact until He calls me Home of old age.

But that rather illiterate “question” smacks of blame and the projection you hear from so many antis who profess that they could never kill another human regardless of the circumstances, could never forgive themselves if they did, and with the very clear implication that if you have to kill another -regardless of justification- and then have the gall to go on with your life? Well then you are just unfit to live yourself and you might as well have let the BG off you instead you of you offing him.

    Sick and twisted shit.

  3. Standard Mischief Says:

You had to post this ahead of “no reddit day”.

I added a line to my /etc/hosts file so none of my scripts run either. We’re trying to get some changes at the top of reddit by staying off the site all day on the 10th of July, (and the rest of the weekend too if you can quit cold turkey.)

I’ll be at voat.co unless it goes down again

One way to find out… Everybody’s perspective is different…

  5. Ian Argent Says:

The question may have been silly. The responses, not so much.

  6. wizardpc Says:

There’s a lot of responses there that read like they were…embellished shall we say

  7. mikee Says:

Stay off reddit for the weekend, it will help the company get their act together more quickly, or perhaps slow the company’s descent into nothing mroe than a money-making surreptitious advertising site.

  8. Snoopy Says:

Compelling because these are stories that you almost never read about in the news and in popular media. Anti-s love to parrot how noone is ever saved by having a gun in their house, or that you should just puke on them in self-defense instead.

Even if only half are true, it still flies in the face of many people who steadfastly claim that you’ll never be the “hero” and save anyone with a gun.

  9. Standard Mischief Says:

I’m staying off reddit today, even though changes are afoot, but a couple of observations:

On reddit, people will concoct complex tales to earn themselves imaginary internet points

Likewise for “original content”, they’ll crop photos, play with color balance and scrape off the watermarks all for that sweet karma

The political climate is very much 20-something socialist democrat, but for some strange reason the RKBA does very well with the average user.

“Serious replies only.” Oh, yeah, that’ll weed out the phonies. Works better than a “Gun Free Zone” sign….

  11. RAH Says:

This is compelling because the do not read like a news story. They are all from a victim’s perspective who survived and killed the attacker. They read as truthful. The most common response is a sense the readers need to get armed because an attack can come at any time.

One or two seemed BS but most were pretty horrifying and seemed very real

Having read a lot of hoaxes and faked victim accounts ( mostly from Liberals) these do not seem like that.

Rather than pan the accounts; read them. As to refraining from going to reddit; Pao has been fired.

What is it to live knowing..

    Better than not living?

  13. mikee Says:

Pao resigned as CEO, but remains as an advisor to the board for either the rest of the year or for another year, depending on source of news. Thus her programs will continue, with her in the background instead of as a leader. Or so everyone fears.

    voat early. voat often.

  15. Standard Mischief Says:

Pao staying on as an adviser sounds an awful lot like saving face. She can pretend to work at reddit while job shopping and everyone can pretend that the split was amical (i.e. not something where someone would have standing to sue.)

Pao has a fairly large incentive to demonstrate that she’s not the type of person to sue every single company willing to employ her.

It remains to be seen whether or not reddit has learned anything from the mod/user protest. With alternatives being funded as we speak with venture capital there’s only a little incentive for users to stay. There’s no “network effect” of having all your friends and family connected on facebook to keep you engaged in your user account.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
