We live in the land of the free and the home of the brave, so bow* before your before your blue-gloved, bureaucratic masters peon.

*And when they say bow, they mean for you to bow very, very low so they can do a cavity search.

Good advice from TSA. (I almost choked writing that)

I take issue with one of their suggestions, though: they say to keep ammo in a mag.

That’s not the way it has worked for me. To date, every airline I have flown requires that ammo be kept in the original manufacturers box, or a box specifically made to hold ammunition. Mag carry is specifically prohibited. Southwest/AirTran went so far as to require that ammo be kept in a different luggage container.

I think the airlines just worry about loose rounds falling out, bursting or whatnot. I prefer the airline approach (though not the SouthWest approach of two bags) because I have actually walked through the security line at an airport and been found with a loose round in a carry-on bag. No real drama for me that day, but one airport to the south and over state lines (my closest airport, fwiw) and I would have been arrested for a felony.

So keep the ammo out of mags and check with the airline specifically regarding ammo placement. Most people ask about the guns and forget to ask about the ammo.

On the day before dove season opened, the Austin, Texas, hotel where I work had about a dozen check-ins of hunters, each with a gun case or three, who had flown in to hunt at friend’s properties in the suburbs.

Flying into Butte, Montana, during elk season I have seen the luggage carousel drop a bag, a gun case, a bag, a gun case, a bag, a gun case, until everyone from the jet had their bags and gun cases.

I would guess that the number of people flying per day with firearms might be higher than “hundreds per day”, at least during hunting seasons. Say, thousands to tens of thousands.

I would estimate that the number of guns

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
