Trump’s position paper on guns

Not bad. I’m not a fan of the mental health records stuff because, with medical privacy laws being what they are, it’s not workable. But this:

Gun and magazine bans are a total failure. Thats been proven every time its been tried. Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like assault weapons, military-style weapons and high capacity magazines to confuse people. What theyre really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans. Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice. The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own.

Right on.

I’ll look at it as a campaign promise.

Doesn’t matter how sincere The Hair really is. When he started talking tough on immigration, the rest of the GOP hopefuls had to do the same. When Donald talks, he draws a line that others need to tow (for now).

Sincerity is an issue in the long run and bluster can hide details. For instance on immigration Trump is actually pro-amnesty, though you’d be hard-pressed to find his supporters agreeing he is. At the end of the day, Trump thinks 90% of illegals here today are “OK people” and should be allowed to “come back in”. The only difference between Trump and the GOP establishment is that Trump wants to spend about a trillion dollars rounding everyone up, right before letting them back in again.

At least on the gun thing he seems more direct. Not sure his people left much room in this paper to wiggle with, but I suspect the Ben Carson approach is always an option: “there are differences between urban and rural areas that should guide gun control laws.”

Either way, nice to see someone talking about it. Even if it is Trump. He might force the rest of the GOP to take a position up on these details, and that is a good thing.

This will be ignored by the press. It does not help fulfill their narrative of The Donald, and it does not help fulfill their narrative of guns as evil.

If it isn’t publicly acknowledged by the press, it might as well not happen.

    So dumb.

I’m at least hopeful that none of you believe he actually wrote that. That was. CLEARLY written by someone at NSSF or NRA or even GOA.

It’s identical in tone and points to everything else out there. He’s a clown and did not even remotely write that. I’m certain his personal views don’t particularly line up with that, but it looks good for his “official” view.

This guy is a clown and he’s not serious about this. It’s marketing for his brand and that’s all. Bush is thrilled I’m sure that right now Trump is just running out the clock until things have to get serious. When he drops, it’ll be no big surprise that the previous year of Trump-isms and Trump-stractions was just fun times leading up to Bush v Clinton :/

‘but I suspect the Ben Carson approach is always an option: “there are differences between urban and rural areas that should guide gun control laws.”

That cause a lot of confusion. And it would also open a Pandora’s box of other laws being differently applied due to locality.

The right to self defense applies equally to people in urban and rural areas.

  7. JTC Says:

If a serious conservative candidate wanted to make a solid impression on serious conservative voters, and make some liberals and media (but I repeat myself) heads go ‘splody, their “position papers” could simply be verbatim Constitution quotes…on guns f’rinstance:

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

    ‘Nuff said.

  8. Ron W Says:

Yeah Steve, if he was sincere then he would say, I support the 2nd Amendment for hunters and target shooters.

Trump’s major “sin” according to the ruling elites of both major parties and the media, is that he is talking like a nationalist. That is a ” mortal sin” which they brand “nativist”. Those who bow before the altar of globalism cannot tolerate one who prefers his own country and own people.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
