It’s really best to find someone with a waterjet cutter and buy sheets of AR500 (then figure out how to move them). Work out a deal with the cutter. Target patters are not complex and cut quick.

Shooting at old brake disks or drums can work out really bad – some people will say this is a good use for these old items.

Second the ‘buy plates of AR 500 and cut them’ except the cut and handle charges will exceed savings for most people who cannot do it themselves. Also it makes no sense for only a few targets.

I do it, but I have access to large plates from a supplier who carries them in stock, and I have a solid plasma cutter, heavy lift capacity and a nice welding setup. So for me it is material + weekend hours. Pay someone to do it as a one-off and you are much better buying them retail.

Also, welding AR takes some attention or you lose abrasion resistance in any heat affected zone, and you will also ruin the weld. It is not rocket science, but it does take a little more than the normal backyard welder normally swallows.

If you just cut holes for hang bolts than skip the welder, but I don’t like those setups.

Also, going greater than 3/8ths thick is not needed if you mostly shoot less than .308. Steel core will ding you but not break you. Targets are always a consumable. Don’t fall in love with them. Kill them with abandon.

My tablet posted when I hit the wrong button.

My final advice is shop for a supplier who does not need to special order the material. Then f I ND a friend who has a plasma setup. Don’t drill or weld them – just set them up against a captive backstop of wood 2x4s. Cheapest way to do it.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
