God damn it

In my life, I’ve met two politicians who I thought were good people. One of them has died. Godspeed, Fred.

I just sorry he withdrew before I could vote for him last time.

    I’m, that is. Stupid phone.

He’ll be missed. He was the first politician I donated money to — days that seem so far away now.

    Meh, this news sucks.

A good guy that played himself…in politics, in movie/tv roles, and in life. A home boy for my family, he graduated from my Mom’s high school and worked in the Murray bicycle plant where my uncles and cousins worked their whole lives. He was popular and influential and the pride of all the little towns in middle TN (Lawrenceburg, Pulaski, Franklin, Columbia, Spring Hill and of course Nashville, where all of my family was sprinkled. His quick exit from the ’08 race surprised me; I think he had pretty broad support, and we can only fantasize about how things would have been different if he had become potus.

One thing I liked the most was his faith; simple and solid but private and not worn like a rose on his lapel, he was just an occasional churchgoer, and understood that “belief” and “church” are separate things entirely.

I’m glad that you and others here appreciated his politics and his style, but I do think he would be disappointed in your post title, with the gratuitous use of God’s name in an epithet as an epitaph to him. I certainly am.

Thompson played a Southerner in the movies and did something few would do: he stayed a Southerner when the scene ended. He was proudly Southern, and did not attempt norther affection. Not even in the ‘Law and Order’ series where he played the DA in Manhattan. You don’s see people do that often (does Brad Pitt come off as mid-Western when out in LA?).

    Prayers to Mr. Thompson’s family.

I recall one of the Republican Primary Debates in which Fred Thompson participated. A questioner asked them if and how many guns they owned. Big Fred declined to answer, rightly(Constitutionally) saying, “it’s none of the government’s business”. Too bad we didn’t get him as our President. As it is written, “absent from the body, present with the LORD.”

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
