Ted Cruz and his shotty
I suppose technically, this guy is correct Cruz is violating the first two rules of firearms safety. But carrying a break open gun that way has been around since break open guns. So, yeah, the guy is pretty ignorant when it comes to guns.

He appears to be taking it in the ass in the comments. Love wins.

Actually, if he carried it the other way, with the muzzle pointed down in front of him, he’d be muzzling the legs and feet of the reporters interviewing him.

Bill Twist – The guy provides 2 pictures of the way he thinks it’s supposed to be done, and in the second one he looks like he’s pointing his muzzle directly at his own right foot.

“…he’s pointing his muzzle directly at his own right foot.”
Well, he does say in the caption that he’s hunting for turkeys…

A break open shotgun, open, on your shoulder, tells all in sight that you are safe.

Oh, I forgot:
Trump/Cruz ’16
Cruz/Carson (or Rubio) ’20-’24

In fact, he has better control over the dangerous end of the gun carrying it like that. If the ammo fairy were to make a malicious and miraculous appearance, and the primer were to spontaneously ignite, the empty shell would be propelled forward because it is much, much lighter than the shot or slug inside. Some shot might make it out of the muzzle, but it wouldn’t go very far or have very much energy, but the shell would be moving enough to be dangerous at close range.
With the action open like that, he just has to make sure he doesn’t point the breech at anyone. If he’s being excessively careful. But even if it was loaded, it’s perfectly safe with the breech open like that.

Cruz is performing a violation of one of the Four Rules. A Technical Violation, to be exact, as he is allowing his gun to point at things not intended for shooting, and thus the worst sort of violation to a bureaucratic mind.
The beauty of the Four Rules is that you pretty much have to violate two of them to hurt anyone. And having the shotty broken open eliminates that possibility, technically and actually.
I say that the technical and actual inability to do any damage with that shotty overrules the technical violation of one of the Four Rules.
Compared to Clinton, Kerry and Obama, whose shotgun handling required a one-time photo op for each, Cruz knows what he is doing with that gun. And I’d trust the safety of the 2nd Amendment to an administration with him as president beyond anything those three clowns could ever do.

I have yet to see anyone in the press address a key question here: is Cruz a decent shot?
If he is, that more or less demonstrates that he takes it seriously.
Different question: if the press won’t ask questions of the candidates that The People want answers to, then what, exactly, is the press good for?
