I think it comes from the “If you disagree with Progressives you’re obviously racist and so all that remains is to explain it” meme. He’s just doing his duty.

There’s also the blatant Orwellian view of “Taking things away from the commoners makes them more equal!”
Heck his whole idea is based on the idea that poor people can’t handle having guns but rich people can (why else would the presence of guns be what makes the crime induced inequality *worse* for low income people.)
But that’s a core view of gun control. Just look at CCW in NYC. Try getting a permit if you’re not connected.
Or the NFA and the blatant tax point of $200 bucks in 1930’s money
Even UBCs would be racist and classist (If you were to use the theory behind the objections to Voter ID)

The argument is pure chutzpah, like asking for mercy in sentencing for murdering one’s parents, because one is an orphan now.
Yes, urban poor are more likely to suffer at the hands of criminal users of guns than to use a gun for self-defense.
That is because gun controllers have made it nigh on unpossible for a legal self defense handgun to be owned or used by urban poor in cities like DC, Chicago, NY, and so on.
Pure chutzpah, and should be rejected as such.
