Military Wants Concealed Carry Rights on Stateside Bases
According to a poll. Well, if they can’t do that, it’s not really a right, now is it?

I’d also like to see them have open carry.

What do you think the rate of illicit concealed carry is right now among the officer corps on US military bases?
There was the recruiting center shooting recently where the ranking officer retrieved his personal firearm from somewhere in the office to stop the attack.
I suspect there is more weaponry available to officers, at least, on US bases than that officially listed on their TO&E.

The basic self evident truth is: ONLY YOUR ENEMY WANTS YOU DISARMED

One thing they teach us in the military is that we are not there to exercise freedom, but to protect it. You check a lot of rights at the door of the MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) once you raise that right hand and sign that form.
I absolutely believe military should be allowed carry on base. But I don’t think it is a right for them, at that time.
Before everyone gets all upset, remember that the difference between an active duty member of the military and a civilian is that the military member can be ordered to die, and face punishment (including execution) if they fail to perform that mission. Once you lose the “right” to avoid your own death, everything else is pretty trivial.

(In my best GHW Bush voice): “Not gonna happen.”
Congress will pass legislation that will “authorize” base commanders to “allow” concealed carry when force protection requires it. ALL base commanders, without exception, will find that force protection does NOT require personnel to carry. Aaaaand nothing will change.
Unless legislation states that base commanders “shall” permit concealed carry, it will never, ever, ever happen.

mikee – On major bases – very low.
When in smaller or more public places such as a recruiting station or National Guard Armory – higher. But even in those places, private firearms are so well hidden they aren’t quickly accessible.

Mike has it correct, and Bram touches on another issue.
On many a post or base, personally-owned firearms are verboten. They must be registered and/or checked in with the unit. Commanders discourage guns in on-base quarters, assuming that banning them will lower suicide rates. So forget carry, it is hard to even possess a gun in base housing.
Congress would have to go deep to fix the issue, and frankly that would be stepping into the authority of the President as Commander-In-Chief.
The answer is a POTUS that knows gun policy, and how it intersects with military work/life.
