Instead of going after real crime, let’s investigate gun companies
The Paper of Making Up The Record:
The New York City public advocate on Monday asked federal regulators to investigate whether the gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson had made adequate disclosures in its financial statements.
In an eight-page letter, the public advocate, Letitia James, said the Securities and Exchange Commission should examine whether Smith & Wesson misrepresented or omitted information about how often its products are involved in crimes and what it has done to keep its guns out of the hands of criminals.
I did SEC disclosures for a while. There is nothing requiring this. But it’s a new take on gun control. A very stupid one. But new.

What the … ?
What has “abuse of product” to do with industrial ethics? Manufacturers have NOTHING to do with Retail Sales. Didn’t we already settle that with the “Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act”, passed in 2005?

“The People’s Republic of New York Commissar on Monday asked federal regulators in the USA to investigate whether the car manufacturers General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler had made adequate disclosures in their financial statements.
In an eight-page letter, the Commissar, Letitia James, said the Securities and Exchange Commission should examine whether car companies misrepresented or omitted information about how often their products are involved in crimes and what it has done to keep their cars out of the hands of criminals.”

I for one would not expect Smith & Wesson to keep track of criminal misuse of their products, except for those instances occurring BEFORE the product leaves the factory.
Which makes me wonder just what the advocate thinks is happening in the S&W factory: Shootouts during lunch breaks?

misrepresented or omitted information about how often its products are involved in crimes and what it has done to keep its guns out of the hands of criminals.
Omitted? Only things not required.
How it keeps guns out of the hands of criminals?
By only selling them through a dealer channel that only sells them to people with a Federal Firearms License, who are prohibited by law from selling to anyone they have reason to believe is a prohibited purchaser, that being enforced by a Federal bureau.
Mean ol’ S+W, not somehow using its magic gun-maker powers to Just Stop Criminals Getting Guns.
