The Government of the United States of America has lost all moral authority. Only the immoral will comply.

I work at that big company in the northwest that deals with the FAA every day. My very public (at work) response when asked about registering: Fuck’em. Not. Going. To. Happen.
That aside, the FAA usually isn’t too bad to deal with — especially compare to just about _any_ other government agency.

The threshold for registration I read was any drone over .55 pounds. Most “play” drones are well under that.

I wonder if that isn’t intentional. The FCC does this from time to tim — they make a half hearted attempt to require “licenses”, first with CB radios and now GMRS. With CBs, they used the rampant ignoring of licensing as the reason for dropping licenses, and are currently in the process with GMRS. You are supposed to be licensed, but they’ve now dropped the fee, and licensing is free. In a couple more years, they can say, “hey, we can’t even get people to register when it’s free, let’s just make it like CB and FRS.”

The AMA ( American Model Aircraft Association) is fighting this one in court. Model aircraft have a legislated exemption in the FARs.
Despite this, the FAA is trying to retro-define them into requiring a permit, without bothering with legalities like using the Federal Register.
