A handy thing I never knew I needed

I was perusing the bookface the other day and saw where Sean had mentioned the KeySmart. I’m a key simpleton. For years, my key ring consisted of a car key, office key, P-38, and a handcuff key*. Now, by virtue of locking stuff up on job sites, I have to carry more keys out of necessity. And this thing works to give the key ring a minimalist feel:

And the keys come come out similar to a Swiss Army Knife, I got the red for that reason:

I even got the handcuff key in there, it fits fine with the included spacers. You can get a red one here.

* People say to me Hey, Uncle, why do carry a handcuff key?

To get people out of handcuffs, of course. And when you own a set of them and have small kids who like to handcuff each other to stuff, that happens more often than you’d think.

    * Because bad guys with bad aims can buy handcuffs on Amazon or even the local sex shop.

Opspec Alert. Do not post pictures of your key cuts online. Computers can be used to figure out the code values of the cuts. Someone bored can make duplicates of the keys. I’m sure you don’t post your address, but still…

Just don’t drop your keys. I had one of those for about a week. It worked well until I dropped it from a height of about three feet. One of the posts broke and keys scattered.

I just dropped mine 10 times from varying heights, highest being as high as I can reach (8 ft-ish). And I threw it a few times. Mine stayed together. Battery cover on the Ford Earthfucker came off though.

They do come in handy. My next project, as soon as we buy a new house, is to come up with a door lock that I don’t need a house key to get into the house. I’m thinking some sort of combination pass code and token. Have to have both, that way you can’t just have my keys to get in, or just know the pass code. Combine that with my keyless entry/keyless start car key fob and I’ll never take my keys out of my pocket again!

    Heh! Testify, brother!

Nephew handcuffed himself to a tree branch 25 feet off the ground. His mom made the FEBE who gave him the cuffs to play with climb up there and get him free.

I’ve been seeing these on pinterest (yes, I’m a big fat nerd) and trying to decide if it was something I would find usable. Thanks for one more data-point.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
