Everybody gets a SWAT team
A county school security team is getting AR-15s. I hope they put sights on them.

How will the bullets know where to go without lasers?

The 1st news article I saw on that identified said firearms only as “long rifles”, initially, and later in the article mentioned semi-auto, and Bushmaster. You know, as in “patrol rifle”. Because of course it’s only an EBR when in the uncontrolled hands of us peons.
And, of course, the micturating response has been in full evidence.

Yep, were gonna give them rifles that “there going to leave locked in vehicles”, so you know they are not available in the school when something happens. The individual will have to leave the area of conflict to become armed and then return to the conflict area.
Yup, that makes sense.

Bushmaster??
Wasn’t that the Evil Rifle of Death that was used at Sandy Hook?

Its Douglas County schools, so I guarantee it will be a hilarious cluster F.

@ SPQR: I said pretty much the same thing when I saw this on the news the other night. I also laughed at the amount they paid and said something like “What, they’ve never heard of buying a less expensive brand or maybe buying guns on Gunbroker? It’s not like they’re ever going to take them out and actually fire them anyway. Just get the cheapest one you can find and lock it away, since that’s all they’re going to do with it.”

Might be safer if they kept the guns locked up at home.

“The 1st news article I saw on that identified said firearms only as “long rifles”…”
Ah, a flintlock with a 42″ barrel. That would be cool, if rather less effective as a battle rifle. Definite style points for fending off an attacker with one of those.

“One accident in close quarters with these things could be devastating, not only to predators but to the students themselves,” Montgomery said. “I would make sure the decision is supported politically and socially.”
Yeah, because the pistols they already have aren’t devastating if they shoot someone, right?
(Contra Shrimp, it’s not like Bushmaster is a really premium brand – Impact will sell you a Bushmaster for $599, just like a Smith and barely more than the cheapest no-name AR.)

Oh, true enough. It doesn’t have to be a premium name to attach premium pricing, though. It is a recognized name and someone sold them 10 AR15s for $12K.
Seemingly, Mr. Payne got himself a little kickback, and the school district overpaid quite a bit and the school board professes ignorance on the entire thing. Nothing new for Dougco schools or anything they touch.

Eh, I’m hard pressed to get to het up over this kind of thing; hell, UAPD has an active shooter response team. Of course, those are all prior service door-kicker types, and they’re all really good at what they do, if my cop buddy is to be believed.
