Othering
Some snowflake professor doesn’t feel good recommending students who are gun enthusiasts. Reading that bigoted nonsense, the student is better off without your recommendation.

Don’t take the endorsement of somebody that wants you to change in order to get it. They are not endorsing you. they and you will be endorsing control.

comments at the original post are 99 percent against the prof.

Yep. I like the comments. Some say “you should not take a student’s hobbies into consideration when writing a recommendation”; others simply say ” you already agreed to do this, why are you rethinking it now?”

I didn’t see a single comment in favor of this professor. Some small measure of faith in humanity has thereby been restored.

I say that if the professor is willing to throw away his credibility, then let him. And stop taking classes from him.

Apparently, the Chronicle cut off comments as soon as they saw which way the wind was blowing – but looking at the “up/down-votes” (which are still open) tells the tale, with up-votes well into the hundreds for some comments – and NO down-votes that I saw.
The people have spoken – I wonder if “Myrtle” will reconsider?

>”It seems to me no person who has truly experienced the full impact of their own emotions would ever go near a gun.”
That statement right there shows exactly what the author’s problem is. As has been noted here many times before, anti-2A folks are generally very angry people with violent emotions. They suffer from projection, i.e. thinking that since they are this way, everyone else must be that way too.

Disqus hasn’t showed down votes for well over a year now at this point, so if there are any you wouldn’t know.
That said, I doubt that downvotes come anywhere near the upvotes. If they did, it would have been reflected in the comments.

This is demonization of law-abiding gun owners in a friendly forum, nothing more and nothing less.
Had the article been written about a student whose predilections ran to exercise of other rights – religious affiliation disliked by the prof, or non-leftist political orientation, or membership in the military, or loitering while being Republican – the prof would have politicized the recommendation in exactly the same way, “othering” the student who did not march in the Long March toward the cliff of socialism.
That professor has no business being in any position of responsibility, trust or authority over others, as she cannot perform the simplest duty of writing a recommendation based on actual performance in her class.
