Now, now! As a former FPO (’83-85) I must correct some misconceptions.
A) We were police officers with full powers both on Federal property and, through delegation of authority from local authorities, non-federal areas.
B) We trained at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center with full classroom, physical training, and firearms instructions.
The title “protective officers” was a concession to congressional powers (read Ted Kennedy) who were afraid Nixon was forming a “National Police Force.” (Project much there Teddy?)
That said, and with all that training under our Sam Browne Belts, we were told “Sit at this desk and make sure everyone has the proper color ID cards.”
Ya, we had a very high turnover. I lasted 2 1/2 years.
As for background checks; Mine was done by the Agency whose property I was assigned. That resulted in a ST/SCI, TK clearance for me. As for the GSA/FPS background check? Still “pending” 9 months into my service.

FPS are glorified mall cops. They are not police.
That’s “Federal Protective Service”.

Look for this to result in “Get a protective order, lose all your guns instantly” type legislation.
You know, like California.
