This is a women’s rights issue. Let’s see here, who is that says women have no right of self defense…gee, who is it? Oh yeah, Islam.
The problem is women won’t stand up for each other on gun rights. They need a bigger base. Go find women to make new shooters, this weekend, that’s an order.
This is far from the dumbest thing I’ve read, especially when I consider the target audience.
On the surface, the victim–the fifteen year old girl who killed her father–is quite sympathetic.
I admit, I had to read the story a couple of times to pick up what is wrong with it: I think these women and girls are getting popped for murder and manslaughter because they are not defending themselves against an immediate threat.
Heaven knows there are plenty of white men who find themselves going to prison for the same reason: they feel threatened, but in the moment they pull the trigger, they do not face a deadly threat in the eyes of the law.
IF the NRA is not explaining that point to the women it’s advising to buy guns, that is a real problem.
This kind of ignorance among the newly armed is an even bigger problem. The complexity of the relevant laws is a problem.
Heck, I’m not even sure I myself have correctly identified what the problem is with this article.
We can mock our opponents or teach them. It may well be the readers at Patheos cannot be taught–I notice that no one is saying, “More of us need to buy guns, learn how to use them, and what the laws are. More of us need to stand up for abuse victims who try to protect themselves.” No, the trend seems to be, “Don’t buy guns, don’t even try to defend yourself.” Which I admit is pretty stupid.
But in a case like this, where even they regard the victims as victims, the effort needs to be made.
And it would help to remind those, like me, who are relatively new to the fight, and don’t yet know the complexities, of exactly where the dumbness lies.
djmoore, ignorance of how and when to use deadly force and what the fallout and ramifications are, is pervasive among all sample groups, from antis to newbies to rambos and even to experienced shooters who have not experienced the ultimate use of their tools. I see that every day and the answer to that is exactly as you say, education one at a time and over a period of time.
But that is irrelevant to the referenced hit piece as it were where they are victimizing this victim all over again by using her case to ridicule 2A itself and its protectors. Mischaracterizing the Zimmerman case is one of their favorite tools. But believe me when I say that out of the hundreds of sympatico replies there, you won’t find any of what I’ve just said even though it does get said, it just doesn’t stay said…as me how I know of their policy of anything but circle-diddle being called hater material and immediately disappeared.
It’s a waste of time trying to respond, explain, and educate in a forum where that doesn’t fit the narrative as this is simply a tiny sample of the massive and rampant disinformation that is supplied with a very specific agenda and with very specific goals. Redirect your responses and efforts to the one-on-one end users of firearms, explaining the rights and responsibilities that owning and using them entails, and we will continue to make progress as we have been for the past decade in winning over the hearts and minds of individuals as to what 2A is and how it applies to our day to day lives.
Of course that doesn’t and never will apply to the politics and aims of those who want you disarmed for nefarious reasons of their own, and who are always glad at the drop of a hat to dance in the blood of babies and genuinely innocent victims like the young girl about whom this article purportedly written.

About the author:
“College turned her world upside down, and she is today an atheist, a feminist, and a progressive.”
The tragedy of “academia” and our times, right there.

Well, maybe they need to pass a “he needed killin'” law. I’ve heard that in some parts of Kentucky, “He needed killin'” is still a valid defense.
Hell, I’d be for it. Especially in cases of documented severe domestic violence.
