Gun Porn

Tam has hands on with the new sooper seekrit Ruger Mark IV. I dig the break open design. I’ve never disassembled the other Ruger 22s but I’ve heard that it’s not fun and you tend to lose zero.

    Oh, my. Oh. My.

  2. Leatherwing Says:

I’ve always liked the Ruger .22 pistols, and it probably breaks down easier than the S&W Victory (which needs an allen wrench), but I just bought a Victory in April and other things are next in line. But it sure looks sweet.

Since both sights on the Mark series pistols are attached to a single piece of the gun, losing zero is never a problem. But just think, the art of Yoga as applied to reassembling a Mark series pistol has been a problem since day one so it only took Ruger 65 years to fix this.

I thought this might be coming. Several websites were having big blowout sales on mklll pistols.

    Want. ::drool::
    SO WANT

If only my state didn’t have that stupid pistol acquisition permit. I could get one but I don’t really feel comfortable going through my county sheriff to get one.

Wow this should have been done decades ago. Taking apart and putting back together my mk 3 is the most unpleasant task in this hobby. It’s like a secret ten step illuminati handshake where you have to hold the gun a certain way in each step or it goes together wrong and gets stuck. It’s incredibly annoying.

I’m not sure I want to spend the money on a new one again. I kind of felt like I got cheated the first time around once I cleaned it the first time.

  8. JimB Says:

Majestic Arms sells a kit that allows you to remove the bolt easily . (No, I don’t work there) Replaces the assembly that hold the bolt in.

  9. mikee Says:

I, for one, always enjoyed keeping a large paperclip around to assist in disassembly/reassembly of my Rugers. Not.

And the instructions are very clear on how to hold the pistol upside down and backwards during reassembly. It requires only 2 tries with 3 hands if you chant the curse words correctly.

It is the other popular .22LR pistol, the Browning Buck Mark, that can lose zero when disassembled and reassembled.

  10. Lyle Says:

You only run into problems with take-down and assembly of the Mark series when you’re not paying attention to the position of the hammer and the hammer’s push rod (which engages the mainspring). Look inside there and heed what you see, and then all those so-called “problems” cease to exist. The bolt goes in only when the hammer is back behind the cocked position. Now drop the hammer (tip it forward into the fired position) before you attempt to install the mainspring assembly, and make sure the push rod is engaged in the dimple at the end of the mainspring where it belongs. See? Now it’s easy.

Maybe a counter-intuitive part is that you’ll want to drop the hammer before take-down. I don’t know what people are doing out there, or if they know themselves, but it isn’t difficult unless you make it so.

And as was said already but bears repeating; the barrel and receiver (I’ll call it a receiver) stay together, as one piece. Any drift in sight regulation is therefore in the head, eyes and hands of the shooter only.

    Heh, good luck Lyle.

I’ve often said the least expensive way for Ruger to ‘fix’ the MK’s is to paint the hammer strut blaze orange.

I guess they decided to take a much more expensive route.

As far as losing zero goes, like Lyle said the sights are bolted to a solid piece of steel. They’re not going anywhere.

  12. Sigivald Says:

Then the upper assembly lifts off the gun, the bolt group is pulled out the back, and you’re done. The gun can be disassembled for cleaning and put back together again in less time than it took me to type this paragraph.

    In a Mark pistol?

    What wizardry is this?

  13. ShallNOTBeInfringed Says:

But, butbut….is, is there a threaded barrel version? Think of teh opreators! Howill they opreate opreationally during they coverdopreations??!!??

  14. Lyford Says:

I have no trouble with takedown/reassembly of my mkII using the following secret technique:

Following the instructions in the manual.

That said, the procedure with the new design does look a whole lot simpler.

  15. Critter Says:

You do not lose zero, but it can make you lose your religion.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
