Make exploding targets
Boom bottles. Way back in nineteen aught eleventy twelve, I used to make these. You could also add a bit of water for a spray effect or a powder, such as flour, for more effect:

A lot less hassle is just fill the bottle with water. It’ll jump when hit. Fill up a whole case (or buy a case of cheap water for less than $3) and save even that effort.

I’ve hot glued pool chalk cubes to targets. Nice colored cloud when the bullet hits it. Follow the same minimum distance rules as with steel targets. (If you find a pool/billiards establishment going out of business you can get standard blue chalk real cheap; if you’re willing to pay for it orange, red, yellow and green are also available.)

I’m pretty sure you meant “explody” targets.
Valve stems aren’t exactly free, are they?
