No one I know who’s been in a gunfight has ever said “I wish I had less ammo”
The NYPD is issuing Glock 17s with 15 round magazines:
The gun, as designed, can hold 17-round magazines two more than the Glock 19. But the NYPD had the manufacturer customize the Glock 17s to carry only 15 rounds so it would be consistent with the interchangeable Glock 19 magazine.
The lack of logic in this astounds me.

“The lack of logic in this astounds me.”
I believe you’re being coy. Logic, prevailing in this situation, would be astounding. The lack of logic is status quo, and as such it is not astounding.

NYPD does not issue weapons; each officer must buy his own (at a deep discount). Notice the wording of the article: The 17s are not being “issued;” they’re being “offered at no cost”.
When NYPD first authorized Glock 19s back in the early 90s, they came with special NYPD-proprietary 10-round magazines that were marked “NYPD-10” on the floor plate. So I’d say this is a giant step forward.
Now if they can dump the 11-pound triggers . . .

Whoa…. the Glock 17 mag is LONGER than the Glock 19. Yes you can use Glock 17 mags in the 19 but not the reverse.
So why manufacture a Glock 17 mag that holds 15? It STILL HAS TO BE LONGER TO FIT IN THE 17!
Idiots!

So…is it a G19 Longslide?

Based on their history, maybe they’re trying to limit collateral damage in a firefight…

If you really, really want to fail, son, it takes planning & hard work.

Didn’t the NYPD get gigged a while back for failing to send all of their officers to annual firearms qualifications a while back? Or did they just get a pass for recert every two or three years?

This might be a complicated marketing ploy by Smith & Wesson to sell the NYPD their M&P models. It is a long con, and will take a few years to play out, but could be fun to watch.

It sounds to me like they may have asked Glock to shorten the G17 grip in order to accommodate existing in-service 15-round G19 mags. That’s the only way to read that statement because slapping a 17-rounder into either model would not be an issue.
I don’t know anything not in the article, so don’t quote me here. But the logic makes sense if you are familiar with the way huge buying bureaucracies work.

‘No one I know whos been in a gunfight has ever said I wish I had less ammo ‘
Sure, but there are lots of times government has looked at the outcome of a successful self-defense and said “I wish he had had less ammo.”

Merely small minds….officers must use mags purchased from dept. Dept has glock make blocked 17 mags. Way too much angst and fear by brass of cops with 2 extra rounds so easier to make glock jump through hoops.

I need to somehow get one of those magazines so I can put with my collection of other things the power of stupid built.

“…so it would be consistent with the interchangeable Glock 19 magazine.”
Dude, a department-issue G19L would be the heat. People pay big money for Robar or Boresight Solutions to chop their 17s to take 19 mags.

If I were GLOCK! I’d be happy to do it…for a premium.
November 29th, 2016 at 9:38 pm
It’s almost certainly not a longslide 19. It’s easier and cheaper to change magazine floor plates so the magazine will only hold 15 than it is to customize either a 19 or a 17. After all, NYPD did it with their original NY-10* magazines for the 19s twenty years ago.
*In an earlier comment I said the magazines were marked “NYPD-10.” That was incorrect; they were marked “NY-10.” I regret the error.

Which makes me wonder: Might this show up in the Glock catalog as a new model? If they’re going to make 36K of them for NYPD (not to mention all the other agencies that copy what NYPD does) the frame moulds and mods will already be paid for so they might as well cash in on it. Like Unc I fail to see the logic being practiced by NYPD, but I can see the advantage in having a sidearm that accepts another full set of different magazines.

I know this has been said, but the 19 mag is too short for the 17, but the 17 will work in the 19, it just sticks out. Or just issue 33 rounders and be super awesome.

Wow. Gun controllers gonna gun control, no matter what.
Like you all, I was hoping for the “long slide” option. Should have known that nothing gun-related from NYC would ever be good.

This’ll probably save the lives of at least a dozen innocent bystanders per year.

Old 1811,
Unfortunately, email confirms you are right and NYPD & Glock aren’t doing anything so baller as issuing factory 19Ls. 🙁
