You caliber sucks
And so does mine. And so does your gun. And mine. There’s enough internet for today
I wouldn’t say the 45ACP sucks. But I do agree that it is likely the least advantageous of the major carry calibers:

I would agree that in a compact or sub-compact, 45 doesn’t make much sense.
There is a such thing as knockdown power…you see it when you shoot heavy poppers that your 115gr 9mm struggles to knock over, but your 45 does it with ease.

I’ve been in several bowling pin matches, and the 45 ACP does a great job of hurling the pins off the table. It’s just about the best there is for that, in a semi auto. The 10 mm, which delivers more energy in a smaller bullet at a higher velocity, doesn’t do as well on pins as the 45. The 44 mag just blows the pins apart.
So there you go; if you’re shooting pins with a semi, the 45 ACP is ideal, though I suspect that wide, lead flat points or wadcutters from a 45 Colt might do a tad better.

Both of you have a point, and if you are ever attacked by some flat metal plates or bowling pins, you will be well protected.

Mythbusters showed that even a .50 BMG doesn’t have “knock-down power” when it comes to human-sized targets. You can tell because, while it may rock you, it doesn’t knock you down when you fire it.

When a boxer punches someone, do they fall down backwards? When you are firing that 50 BMG, you are braced, expecting it, and it most likely has a recoil compensator on it.
Check that video of the gun store robbery again. One shot, and the guy goes flat on his back. Sure, it doesn’t lift him off the ground like Hollywood, but he does go straight back and not down in a heap.

Anything that reliably puts holes in a opponent’s anatomy is advantageous. IMHO, it’s a matter of what round(s) one feels comfortable with.
BTW,I had to stop watching that video less than 3 minutes into it. That dude is fingernail on a chalkboard irritating!

Robert: You are displaying a lack of understanding of physics. The reason that the miscreant in the video fell has nothing to do with so-called “knockdown power” and everything to do with the fact that the bullet was a solid hit on the target’s central nervous system. A hit there with ANY self defense caliber will produce the same result.
Absent a hit on the CNS, the only thing that stops an attacker is the loss of enough blood to drop blood pressure enough to cause a loss of consciousness. That is why center mass hits are so important- hit a major artery like the aorta or hit a major organ like the heart or liver, and this can cause enough blood loss to drop blood pressure to less than 40 mmHg systolic, which will cause LOC within a few seconds.
That is the point: shot placement is far more important than any made up terms like “knockdown” Thanks to Newton’s Third Law, we know that any bullet powerful enough to knock down a target is powerful enough to knock down the shooter holding the firearm. What this means is that NO firearm that is handheld has anything like “knockdown power.”

divemedic, he said there is no such thing as “knockdown power”…Lyle and I were simply disagreeing with that point.
What if the attacker is wearing a kevlar vest? Would more “knockdown power” increase the liklihood of “stunning” the perp? Seems to me it would.

Meh. Choose a firearm in a caliber that suits you and your perceived needs. Then become absolutely expert with them.

@Huck, you don’t seem to be able to differentiate “least advantageous” from “not advantageous”.
I will say that if I lived in a state that limited me to 10-round magazines, I’d probably carry a .45. But I don’t, so my carry guns are 9mm and .40 cal versions of my competition gun. The .40 only because that’s the only caliber I could find in the same layout as my match gun, instead of a decocker model.

From the videos I have seen, .50 achieves knockdown by blowing huge chunks of flesh and bone and sending limbs flying a yard or two.
I’m told that the sound of racking a shotgun also does this.

I can’t decide, so I figured I’ll carry a .45 on my hip and a 9mm in my shoulder holster. And I’ll carry my .380 in my front pocket.
If that doesn’t work, I’ll piss on him.

“If that doesn’t work, I’ll piss on him.”
Depending on what you’ve been drinking, that might be the most lethal of them all!
