When you’ve got the NRA and ACLU on the same side of an issue, and you’re not also on that same side, then it’s pretty safe to assume you’re on the wrong one.
@Tam; Fairly safe, yes indeed. That reads like a scientific axiom, and should probably be written verbatim into the Civics textbooks as “Slick’s Principle”. It would best be accompanied with an explanation of our early 21st Century political climate, and followed up with the fact that an “American Civil Liberties Union” would be just another term for “America” except that the two were often at odds.
If Civil Liberties aren’t enshrined in our founding documents then I don’t know what is. And so for those who believe we need something besides those documents; you’re probably either confused or evil, or both. Early in this on-going Civil War (circa 1860), the Democrats asserted “States Rights” for example, but the “States Right” they had in mind was the “right” to enslave, which would be denied by the Declaration and the constitution. Hence the Progressives’ need for a “Civil Liberties” union.
They can see at least some of the writing on the wall here of course– Being that Progressivism is a mental disorder, they’re protecting themselves in this case. Even a demon has the self-preservation instinct.
Denying a constitutionally enumerated right to gun ownership to a citizen merely because they receive government benefits and have ceded their financial dealings to others is a thin edge on a wedge that eventually leads to government denials of other rights, on similarly weak causes, and eventually the ACLU is in court arguing the government can’t ban abortions, and losing.
The ACLU is playing the long game here, and took a position odious to their institution to protect immediately those positions they do support, from later assaults.
