Life in the future
A seafood company was convicted of animal cruelty for killing lobsters. In Australia, boiling them alive is A-OK but don’t butcher them with knives and saws while they’re still alive. And if you read the rest on various animal cruelty laws around the world, you’ll realize just how arbitrary such laws are. And octopus is an “honorary vertebrate” in Europe because reasons.
The future is stupid.

Sure, go all PETA for the octopods, but who is looking out for the remarkable Humbolt squid, the deep-dwelling giant squid Architeuthis, the delectable calamari squid Sepioteuthis and the tough but flavorful Nototodarus gouldi? If one invertebrate can be an honorary and honorable vertebrate, I say let them all be so categorized. Go ahead and eat them, just stop with the selective anthropomorphizing of octopuses.

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against… We’re after power and we mean it… There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals.” –A.R.
