Accidental gunshot death rates and absolute numbers are two different things, but in this case they both are at a low.
That said, accidental gunshot death rates & numbers are different from accidental gunshot rates & numbers. Dying from an accidental gunshot requires either very bad luck in shot placement or lack of followup care.
At the National Safety Council website, a search for “gun” produces a firearm policy paper from March 01, 2017, which includes the following:
The National Safety Council also calls attention to the lack of meaningful data relating to non-fatal firearms accidents…. The absence of a reliable system for collecting and analyzing such accident data makes extremely difficult any meaningful
evaluation of the effectiveness of accident prevention programs.
Accidental gun deaths are down. Is that because of fewer accidental gun shootings, or is because of good medical care? Right now, nobody knows.
