This is one step up from sending a ten million dollar missile up a camel’s ass, but only in that the number of missiles was higher.
It most likley wasn’t the base commander who ordered a chemical weapons attack. Why blast him and his nice air base for following the orders of Assad?
50 cruise missiles targeting Assad personally would have a much more educational effect upon those thinking of using chemical weapons. And if Assad was killed, would anyone care?
Well, that’s one way to get the confirmation of Gorsuch off the front page of the paper.
As usual, nothing Trump does in unprecedented. Bill Clinton cruise missiled some tents in a desert to get news of that rubanesque intern off the front page.
And of course, throwing ordnance around in countries that there is no congressional authorization to do so is a precedent set by Barack Obama, in his hands-off acquiescence to Hillary’s campaign to blow up parts of Libya, and Congress just took it.
Maybe Congress will find its testicular fortitude and rein in the war powers it gave up explicitly by statute and implicitly by inaction. In no way intending to be complementary, I think Donald J Trump is the person that can bring the Democrat and Republican establishments together on this issue. Or not, because they both want their next president to act in a similarly unrestrained fashion.

@Glenn, a better “double tap” would’ve been applied to Mao when he was murdering 50 million+ to bring in his “progressive” cultural revolution. There’s been many places for emotional intervention in civil wars with atrocities since. Trump needs to go back several months and listen to his own speech about rejecting “the siren call of globalism”. “Drain the Swamp” starting now with the West Wing.
This what it looks like when the President of the United States says “Oh, HELL no!” I’m not saying it was the right thing to do, but I can understand the sentiment and would probably have done the same.
@ravenshrike, OK let’s hope there’s no more squandering of American blood and treasure on “regime change” and “establishing a democracy”. Maybe do as Reagan did with Khadafi of Libya, a direct strike on his residence–and then leave it at that.
Actually, there was an AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force – S.J. 21) approved by Senate committee in 2014 that authorized “Military Force Against the Government of Syria to Respond to Use of Chemical Weapons”.
I read since 2013, when countries agreed to dispose of all chemical weapons — and Russia agreed to and was assigned to dispose of Syria’s — there have been 50 chemical attacks in Syria.
Contrary to what Rand Paul is babbling to media, the attack was conducted with congressional approval.
I think what’s most disturbing to me is that DJT can clearly be goaded into reversing the very policies that got him elected. What else is he going to “evolve” on now?
Well now intelligence from the ground is leaning towards the terrorist groups either having set off the bomb, or Assad’s air force bombed a facility where the terrorists were hiding their own gas they bought from Turkey. The day before the gas attack, there were peace talks being held, it makes no sense for Assad to do this, but it makes perfect sense that the neocons would want it to continue their wonderful strategy across the middle east. Mo money mo money…

I wasn’t aware Congress had voted to declare war, but that’s why US foreign policy has been so shitty for 70 years.

Because Afghanistan and Iraq were such rousing success stories…

The slick play would have been to nuke them and make it look like the Norks did it.

I have no other explanation for this than it was a strategic, in-person demonstration for President Xi.

Bill Clinton’s Serbian air campaign.

SPQR, this was the same guy that twice refused to pull the trigger on OBL, right?

Double tap to center of mass, put the gun down and wait for the cops to show up. He has the authority.
Let one congressman know what you’re going to do and you’ve just telegraphed your move to the entire world within five minutes.
It’s the equivalent of a tweet. New sheriff.
I’m good with it.

Stomping down actual usage of WMDs by a state actor really isn’t globalism as practiced by the previous 4 presidents.

@Crawler, then what was done or anything else should be limited to only that.
