I don’t even

A “third arm” for the Army’s M4s:

This seems like a solution in search of a problem.

“This seems like a solution in search of a problem.”

Remember now, combat arms MOSs are open to all hands.

  2. HL Says:

I think Vasquez used something like that.

  3. Roger Says:

That might improve my offhand a bit.

  4. Alien Says:

All that needs is some attention from the Tracking Point folks.

  5. Ish Says:

    >> [T]he third arm attaches directly to a soldier’s vest to provide support for the gun, allowing the weight to be displaced from the arms to the torso. The intent is for the passive mechanical device to reduce fatigue and also support advancements in weapons[.] <> The third arm provides passive assistance, as it cannot aim or fire the weapon. Its purpose is purely to alleviate some of the burden associated with carrying the weight of the gun. <<

    Just like a sling then.

So what would alleviate the burden associated with the weight (and bulk) of that device?

When I was a Mech Trooper, we had enough weight and bulk to lug around without a lame ass device like that to contend with. I give it a big fail.

    Hey.. it worked in Goonies.

This device, coupled with a powered exosketeton suit, eventually, inevitably, with just a bit of AI added, leads to Terminators. Do you want Terminators?

  9. JK Brown Says:

This device will be very useful when armies face off across a field in disciplined ranks. So if the US Army finds itself in 1817, they are all set.

  10. Bill Twist Says:

If you are so weak that holding a light recoiling 7 lb carbine is such a bother to carry and shoot that you need mechanical support, then I’m going to posit that perhaps you’ve picked the wrong career field, and might want to get into something a bit less physically taxing. Like maybe enrolling in that whole NASA bedrest/spaceflight study.

  11. MrSatyre Says:

@Bill Twist: I tried to sign up for that NASA study, but they wouldn’t let me take my carbine to bed with me, so it was a no go.

I want to see them low crawl through mud with them… then land nav through thickets.

  13. Sigivald Says:

    OH, FFS, people.

They’re testing it with the M4 because that’s convenient.

It’s intended, if you bother to read, for heavier weapons, including future ones.

A 4# support arm is stupid for an M4, yes.

But it’s not for an M249 or M240 or various proposed future heavier weaponry.

  14. SPQR Says:

    I recall “third arm inspection”…..

  15. Kasper Says:

That looks like an optimal weapon for close quarters or jungle use…

  16. ASM826 Says:

Roger beat me to it. I want to try this in a Garand match and see if it improves my offhand scores.

  17. 1 With A Bullet Says:

(thinking to self) I wonder how I can get some of that sweet govt grant money? *sees copy of Edge of Tomorrow dvd leaning against desk lamp..*

  18. Dogzard Says:

Looks like this could be the precursor to the Predator shoulder-mounted weapon system.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
