Deluded, yes. Stupid, no. Try not to underestimate them because regardless of we view them, they spend a stupid amount of money to drive their opinions.
It’s a tactic. To delude millions of people into accepting authoritarian rule, they have to be made to believe stupid things. Therefore they must promote stupidity.
Sure; plenty of their lieutenants, soldiers, useful idiots, pawns, etc., are as dumb as rocks, but those at the top of the command and control chain know exactly what they’re doing. Make no mistake; they’re very, very good at it.
Plus, when you’ve got the entire MSM complex to tell your lies of omission and promote your misrepresentations, you get a lot of eyeballs and a lot of sheep going, “Oh, my!”
See the vid of the sweet little child and the mean looking perps? Followed by an ER doctor suggesting any home with a gun is a dangerous place? Then listen how they emphasize “kids” twice in that blurb, and quickly slip in “under 21”. So of that “oh, my” number, how many were sweet little 4-year olds and how many were something-teen or 20 year old gangers & bangers, hmmm? What was the actual age breakdown, and where did most of these “tragedies” happen, in Happyville or in Hoodville? They present that shit with a straight face, because their ends justify their means, and they’re desperate.
@Lyle, I think you’re correct. Here’s former Obama Atty Gen, Eric Holder, in a short video clip first saying we have to “conduct an information campaign” on guns and then following that up with “we have to BRAINWASH people” re: guns:
The problem for the pro 2A side remains unchanged: that the antis aren’t interested in facts, won’t listen to facts, won’t repeat facts. When pros repeat ad-nauseum how stupid the antis are, it accomplishes nothing in altering the state affairs.

In other words; the problem for the pro gun side is that we see this as a political, hearts-and-minds issue more than the legal issue that it really is. Someone violates the second amendment, they’re not arrested for committing that federal crime (18 USC 242, for one). Instead we try to talk them out of it.
We have the laws on our side, we don’t use them, so they may as well not exist.

The very news organs that report that insipid “gun sales are down” also report that gun sales are continuing to climb: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2017/03/13/in-2017-women-and-minorities-are-buying-guns-heres-why.html
