An inflation calculator I found online tells me that $125 in 1930 would be $1788 now. So when they were new, the Thompsons were selling for a price equal to or higher than a really good AR-15 today. Interesting.

Is there a price point or some range of prices, for firearms, that remains pretty constant over time (inflation factored in, of course)? Ignoring factors like magazine capacity laws, NJ politics, or CA button mag release rules?

Sure, one can always buy a High Point pistol (or its 1930 equivalent, maybe a Spanish knockoff .380?) for the price of a few pizzas, and one could always buy an engraved 1930 Colt (or a Freedom Arms in .454 Casull)for the price of a nice used car, but for the middle part of the distribution curve, (again, ignoring bans & other artificial, temporary market disruptors) have civilian gun prices been pretty constant for the last century?

    mikee,

Prices probably do track to inflation, with a fudge factor thrown in for market conditions. In econ 101, they called it the “Big Mac Index”. They tracked the price of a Big Mac sandwich over time and in different countries to see how prices compared. You could do the same with the “Big Mac” of guns, if you first determined which gun would be the stereotypical Big Mac.

Of course, transferable Thompsons are no Big Macs. They’re more like the McRib, which only come around for a limited time in limited number and are highly coveted by enthusiasts. And if you believe the Simpsons Ribwich episode, the unnamed animal from which they are made has gone extinct.

The “Big Mac” of guns is probably the standard Colt Government Model 1911. At the very least, it’s probably the only thing that has been constantly available for the entire time period we’re talking about.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
