Enforce the laws on the books
That’s a common pro-gun argument. Looks like the DOJ is doing just that:
The Department of Justice announced on Friday that the number of people charged with illegal possession of a gun was up almost 23 percent in the second quarter of 2017 compared with the second quarter of 2016.
Then again, enforcing existing laws is rarely the purpose of passing them.

Calling for the enforcement of a restriction against a constitutionally guaranteed right is not a “pro rights” position.. Rather it’s throwing chum into Progressive-infested waters.
Anyway “illegal possession of a gun”, besides being a contradiction in terms, is, in and of itself, completely harmless to all people in all cases.
Just think about that and let it sink in a bit. No; shut up. Re-read it a few times until the logic of it sinks in.
We all seem to forget that, or at least anyone I’ve ever heard speak on the subject seems to have forgotten it, or never thought about it, or was never exposed to it.
Further; if one has never though of it, or never was exposed to it, then why is that person speaking, pretending to be concerned about upholding the second amendment? One wonders.

Lyle is exactly right. Before talking about “enforcing the laws already on the books”, ask yourself if you can point to one of them — any ONE of them — that is actually authorized by the plain text of the Constitution. You need not even look at the 2nd Amendment; just consider Article 1 Section 8. It’s really simple. There is NOTHING in that section that authorizes federal gun laws. And if it’s not authorized there, it’s not authorized, period.
