Signal to noise
I concur:
15 years ago, the internet was an escape from the real world. Now, the real world is an escape from the internet.

I recently removed all blogging and social media software from my phone. To access any of it requires me to sit in front of the computer instead of just pulling something out of my pocket when I have down time. I think I’m more sane and less dumb because of it. YMMV.

I have resistance. I worry about my fifteen-year old and the iPhone which never leaves her hand.

Also, bring up some ‘John MacAfee’ videos on U-toob, and hear what he has to say about social media vulnerabilities. Pretty sobering stuff.

I have been much happier since I gave up Faceberg 5 years ago. I “miss” a lot of weddings and funerals this way. Also I am spared the agony of endless virtue signaling by people who I used to think were intelligent and duck-face selfies by those who I knew were not.

I went on Facebook for a couple months, and was horrified. People I’d liked, and thought reasonable, became vicious flamers there. So I closed the membership, asked them to erase all my data and comments, and haven’t looked back. I do wonder if they actually erased my data, but at least they’re not accumulating more.

Good call. There’s an app that inserts about 5 seconds to 10 seconds between activation of a social media app and its appearance, on the theory that it breaks the crack like addiction of clicking. Seems to work but I think I’m in line to take the step you’ve done, just way too much time wasted.

I still a an FB acct . I check it about every 3 months . 5 minutes then logged back out . I only keep it as a contact point for old friends from across the country that I served with .
I do have a smart phone . I keep it with me for work and as a way for people to contact me in emergencies etc . I spend a lot of time in the woods and on the water so also acts as a way to contact others “in case” . My biggest use for a smart phone is mapping and navigation . And as a music streaming device .
