All of the local papers are terrible

A former reporter for Knoxville’s newspaper won’t read it anymore:

I see the decline daily, the mistakes, the lack of local content, duplicate stories in different sections, the political bias that drives both news coverage and story emphasis, the disdain this company has for readers and subscribers and yes, advertisers and even for the employees. It stings. Our once proud KNS has become what we once called USA Today the McPaper. Put plainly, the KNS of today is not worth my time or my money. Extract the comics and the obituaries and theres not much fat on the bone. I feel deeply for my buddies still trying to do their jobs.

He’s not wrong. Their website is even worse.

All news is (somebody’s) propaganda. Period.

  2. Huck Says:

The so-called media doesn’t report news anymore. They sensationalize, fear monger, and stir up trouble. And fit in their pro left wing bias and race baiting in between the rest.

My cinnamons perzackly. On my list to call the News Sentinel and cancel the subscription I have had for over 30 years. It was the racist, hate white people rant they went out of their way to get from the Miami Herald reporter (printed last week) that did it for me. I refuse to cite or link to it. Knoxville News Sentinel: You’re gone.

There was always a political bent to news. I grew up in what you might call greater Chicago. (Chicagoland to the inhabitants.) The Sun Times was the Democratic Paper and the Tribune the Republican. All you had to do is look at both papers on the same day to see both were bent. It just wasn’t quite as bad as it is today.

    And they had better editing.

But the newspapers are being killed by Craigslist. Classified ads were a huge part of the paper industry. Followed by print ads – which are now being killed off by Google et al, and probably to be fair, ad blockers.

Doesn’t matter how good the writing, or editing, or how balanced the reporting, if you can’t pay the bills…

Glad they’re dying. Like a nasty, geriatric pedophile, they need to die. Burn in hell, fockers.

Tampa Tribune was last of a breed in Fla, not conservative or liberal but both with a solid and balanced editorial approach. Saint Pete Times aka NYT South bought them out, killed them off, and redubbed itself Tampa Bay Times. May they die a lingering painful death trying to cling to irrelevance.

  7. HL Says:

Please, refer to it as “The News Slantinel”.

I lived in the tri cities area for several years and despaired of a real newspaper. When I moved back to Knoxville I thought, at last I’ll have a real newspaper again. As time went on, I realized that this was not the same paper I remembered. It had taken a hard left slant and made no pretense of fairness. They would not run ads for guns, but they had no problem with alcohol and adult entertainment.
What really got me was the dishonesty. They advocated for a state income tax and when it failed they claimed that they did not advocate for one. The last straw was when they ran a cartoon insulting guns owners as redneck buffoons.
Fortunately for me, I have found an alternative. A few years ago, Delta gave people with low mileage points a choice of paper and magazine subscriptions or loss of the points. I picked up the Wall Street Journal and kept it. I get far more national and international news then what the Sentinel gave me. I can get local new on the radio and the tv station websites. I have not missed it.

What’s hilarious about Craigslist killing the newspapers is that CL is a leftist/hippy San Francisco establishment.

Ebay bought a chunk of it from a disgruntled founder, and the remaining members promptly arranged the rules to eliminate any possibility of them changing the format to generate more profit.

CL makes a mere pittance of what it is capable of generating.

We moved to Louisville recently. I subscribed to the Daily Times (Maryville). It is a smaller publication but much better local and state reporting. If you are into high school sports their coverage far exceeds the News Slantinel. I have lived in the Knoxville area for 17 years and have watched the New Slantinel steadily move left. Also, their editing has become horrible. Their typos, stray words, etc are getting more frequent.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
